Budget

•  Quantitative plan of activities and programs expressed in terms of assets, liabilities, revenues, and expenses. Budget participants will be involved in carrying out the plan, or in other quantitative terms such as units of product or service. The budget expresses the organizational goals in terms of specific financial and operating objectives. Advantages of budget preparation are planning, communicating company-wide goals to sub-units, fostering cooperation between departments, maintaining control by evaluating actual figures to budget figures, and revealing the interrelationship of one function to another.

Donation

•  a gift to a fund or cause, typically for charitable reasons

Eligibility

•  Criteria set forth by a grant making agency to weigh whether a grant seeker should be given funding or not

Government grants

•  are economic aid issued by the United States government out of the general federal revenue

Grant

•  is money given to an individual or an organization that does not hold an obligation of repayment

Grant making agency

•  government, public or private foundations providing grants to individuals or organizations

Grant seeker

•  a person, a group or organization applying for a grant

Financial aid

•  refers to funding intended to help students pay tuition or other costs, such as room and board, for education at a college, university, or private school

Formula grants

•  provide funds as dictated by law

Foundation

•  is a type of philanthropic organization set up by either individuals or institutions as a legal entity (either as a corporation or trust) with the purpose of distributing grants to support causes in line with the goals of the foundation

Loan

•  when a lender gives money or property to a borrower and the borrower agrees to return the property or repay the borrowed money, along with interest, at a predetermined date in the future

Matching Funds

•  a portion of the total cost of a project to be provided by the grant seeker to "match" the funds awarded by a grant making agency. This is usually anywhere from 10 to 15% of the total amount requested. Match funds may be in cash or in kind.

Project grants

•  the most common form of grant and a large number are found in scientific research, technology development, education, social services, the arts, and health care

Proposal

•  a written application backed by supporting documents submitted to a grant making agency for review 

Scholarship

•  an award of access to an institution or a financial aid award for an individual (a "scholar") for purposes of furthering their education

Seed money
